About Me

My name is Ben Greaves, I originate from South Yorkshire and moved to Cardiff 5 years ago.

I have been 3D designing in my free time for the last 8 years and have a small customer base in which I sell my designs to.

With this portfolio I will briefly explain my process and how I achieve my desired results.

I have three methods of how I go about designing my products

First method I modify an already existing product in order to achieve a different goal

When I’m working with different materials I will use a 3d drawing as a guideline and then build it by hand

example of this is when I’m building storage units for the restaurants

Second method I will design the modifications in my software and then attach them to the product

To achieve this I will either take measurements of the item itself or recreate it in my software

Third method I will design everything from the ground up

Despite this being the hardest to achieve as I have to factor in the printing process this is my preferred method

I own two types of 3D printer, FDM and SLA. Both of which have different requirements needed in order to get a successful print

When I have a design I’m happy with I then need to decide which method would be best to use

Most models will require supports to print properly and knowing where best to add them is also important

SLA has the added challenge of needing to understand basic fluid dynamics to avoid the model releasing from the print bed

The post processing changers depending on how the model was printed and what the intended use is

For my purposes all the parts have to fit together smoothly and move with as little friction as possible

For FDM each part has to be carefully sanded smooth

I build the puzzle and do tests to see if the puzzle works and if I need to redesign any aspect

Next spray paint each piece to a uniform colour

I will then design the stickers to be cut on my vinyl cutting machine and apply them by hand

SLA has to be wash and cured before it can be handled but it gives far superior results over FDM and can often not need any sanding at all before putting the puzzle together

Here are a few examples of puzzles I’ve made over the years

I have created numerous puzzles that have helped me gain knowledge and expertise in this field. However, the skills and techniques I have learned can be applied to various other aspects of design as well

My experience has not only given me knowledge on how to produce a product, but also how to incorporate the manufacturing aspect into the design

if you have any further questions regarding my puzzles or the health and safety concerns related to using FDM or SLA as a print medium, please feel free to message me. I would be more than happy to help
